A scholarly type, actually, someone much closer to me than just a scholarly type, but someone, not Oppenheimer this time, who also wanted to remain anonymous; offered me this piece of paper the other day. 'Don't do things which will make you unhappy' he said to me. 'The aim is to find happiness, and in order to do so, you should not pursue things you know will ultimately bring you suffering'. Sagacious words from a man who has had his fair share of suffering. On that basis I read the passage and I marvelled that after more than 2000 years Aristotle's words have a certain veracity despite what some would call archaic ideas. However, it is perhaps Aristotle's virtues that have lead to a crisis in the global population, a social networking overload, the obsession with fame, and widespread greed in corporate America. And yet strangely, I completely agree with him.
