The Sun Also Rises or 'Fiesta' by Ernest Hemingway plays out over the coast of France and Spain between Bayonne, Biarritz, San Sebastian and eventually down to Pamplona. It was one of the pivotal books of my youth and inspired me to seek unrequited love in my early twenties. I arrived last night in Biarritz and to my surprise, it lacked a certain charm that I was expecting of it. Whether it was the fact that the surf culture was supplanted where there used to be an aristo playground or whether it was the tourists that frequented the area, I did not know. But certainly Hemingway's portrait of these towns lead to a little bit of a let down.
