Today on our Instagram I took a small excerpt from a film I love, directed by Martin Scorsese, as the character Lionel Dobie, played by Nicholas Nolte, turns his art manager away saying he has nothing to show him.
Alexis Zambrano submitted today which gave me a high sigh of relief, a wonderful submission, coloured pencil on paper with silver foil. What a piece of art!
I love it.
It really isn't that hard to do. Give yourself some time in the mirror, see where you are at, sketch what you see. Yes, we want to see silk and neckwear, but that's it, the rest is up to you and let's face it the best portraits I've seen always have fabric in them, from Frida to Vincent, shawl scarves to bandages on ears, suit fabrics to dresses made of silk in a Botticelli or Da Vinci, things that adorn us, that we love, add to that character.
Looking forward to seeing what you come up with. Submissions +61413140994
PS: I managed to get in touch with Alexis to further ask him more about his artwork. Please have a read below:
Can you give me a brief run down from when you wrapped up M De Phocas, what it was for you at that time, and where you are at now as an artist and everything that mattered in between?
Since closing M. de Phocas, I've undergone significant growth as an artist. At that time, art was just my lifelong hobby; M. de Phocas was a project I did in partnership with Jesus D. Torres where we designed and produced men’s accessories and fine jewelry, It was a defining moment for me, solidifying my passion for men’s style and fashion. Since then, I've explored new mediums, refining my voice and vision, doing artists residency programs around the world connecting with fellow artists, curators, gallerists and learning from critiques, to expand my creative community. Today, I feel more confident, experimental, and committed to pushing the boundaries through my art.
Can you tell me about your submission and how it came about?
My submission is a symbolic work that explores the idea of introspection and self-discovery. The image of a myself within a myself within a myself is a representation of the layers that make up our existence and the journey of peeling back those layers to reveal our true essence. The concentric spiral motif surrounding the portrait symbolizes the cyclical nature of this journey, where each iteration brings us closer to our purest form. The color palette, featuring shades of blue, black and white color is reminiscent of traditional porcelain, evoking a sense of clarity, calmness, and timelessness. The addition of silver leaf brings a touch of luminosity and reflectiveness, symbolizing the light of intuition and inner guidance that illuminates our path. The entire process, from conception to completion, was a journey of introspection and self-discovery, as I looked to distil the essence of my own inner world into this visual representation."
Can you tell us about your plans for 2025 for your art and a bit for your personal life?
Looking ahead to 2025, I’ll be working the first months of the year in my studio in Monterrey Mexico; I'm excited to do a few residency programs during the year, I applied to a couple but am still waiting to hear the results/acceptance. I plan to delve into new projects that explore the relationship between the physical and spiritual realms. I will pre presenting some works at Mexico City art week during the fairs as well as creating some new pieces for a show next summer in NYC.
