Repps Silk Under The Magnifying Glass

Repps silk, which was used to create the 'Dieu' bow, is made by running one colour of thread across the weft continuously for a number of runs before switching to a different colour of thread. The block of colours therefore appear very similarly to the straight solid colours of a flag which is why Repps silk is very popular for sporting teams, clubs and community uniforms.

In Black Duchess Silk Satin you will see that the weave follows one direction.

Anchors Under Microscope

Here you will see the Anchors fabric under miscroscope. It is a satin warp which you can see in the top image as the black fabric between the white and navy weft. The navy forming the colour and the white forming the anchors in the design. This would mean that as the satin warp is passed down the machine, two thread balls, one of navy and one of white, would be passed across the machine, weaving in and out to form the colour and pattern of the silk off the black satin base.

Looking At Silk With A Microscope

I was recently given a wonderful gift from a silk supplier in Como after presenting him with a bow from my new collection. It was a tiny magnifying glass which allowed me to view more closely the weave of the silks and enabled me to understand in greater depth the warp and the weft of the silk. In this image you will see that the polka dot strands are part of the weft whereas in some types of silk the warp will be a satin and the weft will form the polka dots.
